About the Fund

Anna Umanskaya ’10 has left an indelible mark on every person who knew her well. In her memory, we seek to create a fund to support independent and ambitious students in their pursuit of learning and service at Brandeis University.

Our goal is to raise at least $15,000 to support stipends for Brandeis undergraduate students to pursue unpaid summer internships. If we meet this goal, we can give a $5,000 stipend to one student per year for three years in Anna's memory. The students who receive this funding would intern at an organization that supports the elderly or immigrant communities.

While at Brandeis, Anna was deeply touched by her connections with Russian-speaking elderly residents at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale, Massachusetts, and we hope that a similar experience can be offered to future students in her memory.

If we do not meet our goal of $15,000 for this specific purpose, the funds raised will support general scholarships for undergraduate students. If we reach a goal of $20,000 or more, we can offer more students the internship fund.

About Anna

On November 30th, 2021, Anna Umanskaya took her own life. Anna had to overcome many adversities throughout life. She was incredibly resilient, vibrant, tenacious, and fiercely independent. She was the recipient of a New York Times scholarship which allowed her to attend Brandeis University.

Owing to her resourcefulness and the generosity of many, Anna graduated from Brandeis with a degree in Sociology and went on to complete a Master’s program in Education at Hunter College. She became a school counselor, striving to help children in a community of immigrants, helping them navigate the complexities of a broken system which she had done largely on her own.

Anna's time at Brandeis shaped her in a positive way. She was extremely active in the Russian department and sought out meaningful experiences such as internships working with the elderly and the youth. Anna loved and was loved by so many including the elderly, children, animals, immigrants, and people from all over the globe, from all walks of life.

We will always remember and honor her. We love and miss you, Anna. We hope that you rest in peace.
