  • Supreme Court Group Swearing-In Ceremony

    June 1, 2015

Fourteen alumni lawyers joined the bar of the Supreme Court at the fourth annual Brandeis group swearing-in ceremony on June 1.... While many law schools conduct similar rituals, Brandeis is the only institution that does so for undergraduate alumni. During the formal ceremony, Chief Justice John Roberts called upon Brandeis President Frederick M. Lawrence, a member of the Supreme Court bar since 1993, to move the group for admission. The Brandeis group also heard the reading of four opinions, including the court’s 8-1 decision in favor of a Muslim woman who was denied a job at a clothing store chain because her head scarf violated the company’s “Look Policy.” Following the ceremony, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, H’96, and Roberts greeted the Brandeis group and their guests. Lawrence presented the justices with a copy of “Lincoln and the Jews: A History,” a new book co-authored by Jonathan D. Sarna, ’75, MA’75, the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis. Frank Brandeis Gilbert, the grandson of University namesake Louis D. Brandeis, an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1916-1939, was in attendance. Several other alumni lawyers who are already members of the bar also attended. Following the swearing-in, the group celebrated at the Monocle Restaurant on Capitol Hill.
