Our exclusive tour will be led by Joseph M. Wardwell, associate professor of painting in the Department of Fine Arts at Brandeis, and founder of the Brandeis in Siena program.
About the Trip
The Italian Riviera and Chianti, two of Italy’s most beloved regions, harmonize to offer a captivating blend of Mediterranean vistas and rolling countryside, as well as fine wines and superb cuisine. From Sestri Levante, explore the Italian Riviera, including Portofino, Camogli and the seaside towns of the renowned Cinque Terre. Then, travel to Chianti in the heart of Tuscany and stay in the historic town of Radda. Sample Chianti wine produced from the local vineyards. See the highlights of Florence, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio and Ponte Vecchio. Visit Siena, Florence’s powerful medieval rival. Explore the hill towns of Castellina and San Gimignano, and visit the enchanting Colle di Val d’Elsa.
While in the seaside Sestri Levante, travel by land and sea to villages along the Ligurian coastline. Discover brightly colored towns that cascade down the sides of the steep hills and breathtaking panoramas in Cinque Terre National Park. In Radda, travel amid hills crowned with sprawling vineyards and explore the region’s medieval towns, which boast a rich architectural and artistic heritage. Journey across the southern Chianti countryside to Siena, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval cities. Walk twisting stone alleys lined with palaces, Gothic churches and red-brick homes. Witness the exquisite cathedral and 17 historic neighborhoods known as the contrada. Stroll through 12th-century Piazza del Campo to view the Palazzo Pubblico. Conclude your trip by retracing Michelangelo and Dante’s footsteps in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance.
About Professor Joseph Wardwell
Joseph Wardwell is associate professor of painting in the Department of Fine Arts at Brandeis. In 2015, Wardwell launched Brandeis in Siena. an intensive arts-focused, study-abroad program, in partnership with the Siena Art Institute.
Wardwell received a BA in art history and a BFA in painting in 1996 from the University of Washington, and an MFA in painting from Boston University in 1999. He has exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, and has work in each permanent collection. In 2012, Wardwell received a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. In addition to numerous group exhibitions, he has held solo exhibitions in New York; New Haven, Connecticut; Boston; and Seattle. His work is represented by LaMontagne Gallery in Boston and Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven.

Palazzo Leopoldo offers the ambience of a Tuscan villa in the heart of Chianti. This inviting hotel was built in the 14th century as a way station for pilgrims. It wasn’t long before the property was converted into a manor house, the control hub for 24 nearby farms. Today, the hotel has retained much of its Old World charm, which is enhanced by modern amenities, including an indoor pool, fitness center and spa. The restaurant serves regional cuisine. Wi-Fi is complimentary.
