Nearly 60 alumni and their families cheered on the Brandeis men's and women's basketball teams as they both defeated host NYU.... The twin wins (50-47 for the women, 86-80 for the men) marked the first time the Judges had swept NYU in New York. After the games, attendees continued the celebration at Bedford Falls. Lichtman has correctly predicted every presidential election since 1984, although he is undecided this year. Prospective students raised questions about their upcoming lives and courses of study at IBS, as well as career development. Alumnni also asked academic questions of Reitano, who will teach at Wuhan University until the end of June and speak with alumni again at a Brandeis event in Beijing on June 30.

The Wien Alumni Network hosted a reception and panel presentation on Human Migration in the 21st Century at the Penn Club in New York City.... More than 50 alumni, representing all decades, gathered to hear a panel of distinguished alumni speak on this timely topic, exploring its economic, social and political implications and viewed through the lens of the Wien alumni experience as migrants themselves. This event continued the tradition of hosting Wien alumni to foster dialogue on topics of international significance, while strengthening the bonds within and across the increasingly global Brandeis family. The moderator for the event was Deborah Berebichez '96, chief data scientist at Metis and TV host at Discovery Channel. The panelists were Juan Corradi '65, MA'67, PhD '73, professor of sociology, NYU; Vyjayanthi Rao '89, director of Terreform Center for Advanced Urban Research; and Geir Haarde '73, ambassador of Iceland to the United States.

Denizens Brewing Company, co-founded by Julie Verratti '04, is the first and only production brewery and two-level taproom in Silver Spring, Maryland. The brewery has produced more than 30 beers to date and distributes its wide-ranging styles of beer to more than 60 bars and restaurants in the D.C. and Maryland area.

Maura Jane Farrelly, associate professor of American studies and director of the journalism program, moderated a panel discussion about "Spotlight," the 2015 film that follows Boston Globe reporters as they expose a shocking cover-up by the Catholic Church. Panelists included Eileen McNamara, professor of the practice of journalism; Josh Singer, "Spotlight" screenwriter; and Scott Feinberg '08, awards columnist for The Hollywood Reporter. "Spotlight" has garnered awards from the Writers Guild of America and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and has been nominated for multiple Academy Awards.

Fourteen alumni lawyers joined the bar of the Supreme Court at the fourth annual Brandeis group swearing-in ceremony on June 1.... While many law schools conduct similar rituals, Brandeis is the only institution that does so for undergraduate alumni. During the formal ceremony, Chief Justice John Roberts called upon Brandeis President Frederick M. Lawrence, a member of the Supreme Court bar since 1993, to move the group for admission. The Brandeis group also heard the reading of four opinions, including the court’s 8-1 decision in favor of a Muslim woman who was denied a job at a clothing store chain because her head scarf violated the company’s “Look Policy.” Following the ceremony, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, H’96, and Roberts greeted the Brandeis group and their guests. Lawrence presented the justices with a copy of “Lincoln and the Jews: A History,” a new book co-authored by Jonathan D. Sarna, ’75, MA’75, the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis. Frank Brandeis Gilbert, the grandson of University namesake Louis D. Brandeis, an associate justice of the Supreme Court from 1916-1939, was in attendance. Several other alumni lawyers who are already members of the bar also attended. Following the swearing-in, the group celebrated at the Monocle Restaurant on Capitol Hill.

Professor Daniel Kryder led a discussion, “From Selma to Ferguson: Police and Protest and American Democracy,” at the home of Gil '79 and Linda Moskowitz Drozdow '80, P'12, P'15... He reviewed American history, protest groups — including those seeking the vote for women or the end of racial segregation — taken to the streets to voice their claims, usually coming into contact with police. Using the celebrated film “Selma” as a starting point, the discussion focused on how Martin Luther King understood the police in the heyday of the civil rights movement and whether the lessons he learned are still relevant today.

The advertising industry has become the financial backbone of the news industry in the United States – an industry that is a cornerstone for our entire democratic system.... Professor Farrelly examined the development of the publicly traded, for-profit news model in the United States, paying particular attention to the history and impact of the relationship between news and advertising. She challenged her audience to consider the role that America's collective "character" played in the development of a democratic system – unusual in the West – that ties a primary means by which individuals prepare themselves to meet the mandates of citizenship to commercialism. The rise of the Third Reich confronted Hollywood with an unwelcome set of economic, cinematic and moral problems. ... Those issues included how to conduct business with the Nazis; whether to address or ignore Nazism in Hollywood movies; and the coverage of Hitler and his victims in the newsreels. During the 1930s, the image of the Nazis and the full meaning of Nazism, came slowly to Hollywood, like a picture looking for a focus – fuzzy and dimly lit at first, clearer and more ominous as the decade wore on. More than 70 people gathered to hear Professor Thomas Doherty at the Los Angeles home of Stan Brooks '79. Scott Feinbeg '08 served as co-host.

Attendees learned how the brain functions and the causes of protein degeneration that lead to debilitating diseases. Kosinkski-Collins discussed the latest research into neurodegenerative diseases being conducted at Brandeis and shared news of possible future therapies for treatment. Over 30 Boston-based alumni returned to campus on September 16 to volunteer as “industry representatives” at the Business, Consulting and Finance Industry Night.... Brandeis alumni gathered for a day of fresh air, apple picking and family fun at Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, MD on September 14.... Guests enjoyed tractor rides, pick your own apples, beautiful weather and a chance to learn about the orchard and crops from one of Butler’s own farmers. Organized by the Rose Art Museum and Carol S. Eliel, curator of modern art at LACMA, the display of 70 paintings and drawings is the first major retrospective of Altoon’s work. More than 150 alumni and friends from Southern California enjoyed the tour and a talk by Chris Bedford, the Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose. The exhibition will be on view at the Rose from Oct. 8-Dec. 21.

Brandeis University's Rose Art Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art launched a shared initiative to support the work of emerging Israeli video artists. ... Suzanne Landau, director and chief curator of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, announced the establishment of the Chami Fruchter Prize For An Emerging Israeli Video Artist at a ceremony at the museum on May 25. Initiated by Chami and Lazar Fruchter, P'06, P'16, the prize will be awarded every other year to an Israeli video artist who has demonstrated considerable promise but has not yet been the subject of a solo museum exhibition. The event included remarks by President Fred Lawrence and a lecture by Chris Bedford, Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum: "Moving the Image: Israeli Video in American Museums."

The inaugural meeting of the Brandeis Graduates Association of Ghana was held on Saturday, April 26 in Accra, Ghana.... This exciting initiative came to fruition because of the dedicated commitment of several Heller School graduates in Ghana and the generous encouragement of Bernie Lind '63. The aim of the group, as stated in its constitution, is "to seek the academic, professional, social and general welfare of all members and promote social justice in Ghana." Julian Hyman '78, vice president of capital markets at Eastern Bank, led Boston-area Bold alumni in a Financial Planning Workshop on Thursday, April 10 at Elephant & Castle in downtown Boston.... In a talk entitled, "Are You Financially Ready to be 20-30 Something?" he helped the group navigate through some of the tough and confusing financial decisions facing recent graduates. The discussion carried over a wide variety of topics, from building credit to saving for retirement to determining the best method to budget and more. Over 20 Brandeis alumni and many other employer representatives were on campus on Tuesday, April 8 for the "Just In Time" Job and Internship Fair, sponsored by the career centers at Brandeis University.... This event was the largest recruiting event of the year, attracting over 330 students to network with 62 unique employers for open jobs and internships in a variety of industries. Employers conducted 184 interviews with attendees following the fair for immediate openings at their organizations. On Sunday, April 6, the Houston-area Brandeis community gathered at the home of Hannah '05 and Michael Hofrichter '06 for a Faculty in the Field event with Scott Edmiston, director of the Brandeis Office of the Arts.... Speaking on the topic, "A Sense of Direction: From Hamlet to American Hustle," Edmiston, an award-winning stage director who teaches dramatic literature at Brandeis, led an interactive conversation about how drama is conceived, constructed and interpreted by actors, directors and audience members. Guests enjoyed a lively discussion as well as time to mix and mingle with each other.

On 3 April, a dozen alumni working in London joined Stephen Cecchetti, professor of international economics at Brandeis, for an intimate lunch in Canary Wharf.... Professor Cecchetti rejoined the faculty at Brandeis International Business School after a five-year term at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland. He served as economic adviser and head of the Monetary and Economic Department, managing the research, statistics and publications produced by the BIS. Over lunch, Professor Cecchetti reflected on his time at BIS and led a technical discussion on the next stage of global finance, impact of central bank monetary policy and effects of public and private debt levels on economic growth.

The Brandeis community enjoyed a special, private screening of the critically acclaimed documentary film “Anita: Speaking Truth to Power” on Thursday, April 3 at the Landmark Embassy Cinema in Waltham, MA.... The film chronicles Brandeis professor Anita Hill's decision to speak during the confirmation hearings for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in 1991 and the subsequent impact of that choice. Tickets to the 275-seat theater sold out within hours of going on sale. Following the screening, the full theater rose to offer Professor Hill a standing ovation as she joined the group for a Q&A session moderated by Florence Graves, founding director of The Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis.

On Thursday afternoon, March 27, more than 20 alumni made their way to Brown Rudnick LLP at One Financial Center in Boston for a Downtown Lunch featuring Brandeis sociology professor Sara Shostak as she spoke... on the topic, "Environmental Health Science and the Public's Health: Visions for the 21st Century." Professor Shostak's talk examined the competing perspectives regarding the future of the environmental health sciences, the larger social and political issues which underlie them, and the real-life implications for public health. With knowledge and inquisitiveness in true Brandeisian fashion, guests asked pointed and intellectual questions of Professor Shostak and each other, creating a group discussion that carried on past the formal end of the event. 12 Boston area alumni and employer volunteers were back on campus on Wednesday, March 12, for the Hiatt Career Center's Interview Coaching Night.... The volunteers conducted 46 practice interviews and offered constructive feedback to help current students improve their skills in advance of summer internship and full-time job applications. Alumni volunteers represented a variety of companies - from executive search firms to family law practices - and class years - from 1953 to 2012. Alumni and current students spent a beautiful afternoon exploring London as they participated in a HiddenCity Treasure Hunt on Sunday, February 9.... The scavenger hunt served as an introduction to London for current students studying abroad as well as a fresh perspective for longtime residents of the British city, bringing them throughout the metropolis from famous thoroughfares and landmarks to curious side streets and less-familiar areas. The group split into three teams as they followed the West End Explorer Trail from Mayfair to Soho through Trafalgar and onto Southbank. After several hours of exploration, the group reunited at a local pub for a well-deserved pick-me-up. Club president Damian Payiatakis '99, MA '00 arranged this adventurous event.

Brandeis alumni and friends learned a lesson in African-American history with Professor Chad Williams at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco on Sunday, February 9.... Professor Williams, a Bay Area native and chair of African and Afro-American studies at Brandeis, discussed his award-winning book, “Torchbearers of Democracy.” He also examined the meaning of democracy for African Americans during World War I and its aftermath through the experiences of African American soldiers and veterans in the US and France. Taking on Emory University, the women’s team edged out a victory while the men came close but fell to their competitors. This year’s event celebrated the season of giving and Brandeis’ spirits of social justice as it was hosted at the Delancey Street Restaurant in San Francisco. The restaurant serves as a key training facility for the Delancey Street Foundation, the largest self-help residential organization for people who have hit rock bottom to completely rebuild their lives. In December, alumni and parents in Korea welcomed President Frederick M. Lawrence at a special dinner reception at the J.W. Marriott in Seoul.... Alumni from the 1960's through 2013 celebrated their alma mater and made plans to increase alumni activity in Korea. President Lawrence shared an update from campus and encouraged attendees to be ambassadors for the university and to build a strong Brandeis network in Korea. Alumni from all schools and graduate programs at Brandeis are invited to participate in future events in Korea.

Chris Bedford, the Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum, addressed the group in the Lois Foster Gallery, housing the museum’s Andy Warhol collection. Following his remarks, Bedford led the group on a brief guided tour of the museum. Guests then shifted to the Faculty Club, where they enjoyed refreshments and performances by Starving Artists, a Brandeis undergraduate a cappella group, and graduate students in the MFA program. The 26th Annual Thanksgiving Day Tea deviated from tradition as the Alumni Club of Great Britain hosted the November event at Saatchi Gallery,... one of England’s top modern art galleries and a fitting venue for guest speaker Chris Bedford, the Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum. The crowd reached record numbers with more than 80 attendees, 13 of whom were incoming Midyear students. The event included a special thank you to Alberta ’56 and Henry Strage, who graciously opened their home to host the first 25 Teas. Brandeis alumni deviated from their traditional lunch breaks to enjoy a Downtown Lunch with Professor Stephen J. Whitfield, PhD '72 on Tuesday, November 19.... Speaking on, "National Security vs. Freedom of Expression: How the Pentagon Papers Changed American History," Professor Whitfield narrated the intricate story of the leak and publication of the Pentagon Papers. He ended the discussion with the event's effect on the interpretation of the First Amendment, the American public's trust in its government and what the situation's consequences mean for modern-day security threats. Northern California alumni and family members stepped away from their daily lives and into Hidden Villa,... a nonprofit educational organization that uses its organic farm, wilderness and community to teach and provide opportunities to learn about the environment and social justice, for an afternoon of family-friendly fun on Sunday, November 17. Guests enjoyed beautiful weather and a few hours exploring organic gardens, interacting with farm animals and reengaging with the great outdoors. Maiya Marshall '08 chaired this event.

On Sunday, November 17, more than 30 Brandeis alumni, parents and family members reveled in a piece of American history as they enjoyed a private tour of the Mark Twain House,... home to one of America's greatest authors, Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) and his family from 1874 to 1891. Guests experienced the history of the home where the beloved novelist composed his most iconic works, including "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," "The Prince and The Pauper" and "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court." A small Brandeis gathering was held in the Café prior to the tour for alumni and guests to reconnect and mingle. Club co-presidents Mike '99 and Sara Goldfarb '99 chaired this event.

On Thursday, November 14, approximately 40 alumni and friends gathered at the home of Susan '90 and Andrew Zeitlin '90 for a meet and greet with Bruce Springsteen's longtime manager, Jon Landau '68.... During what was truly a memorable evening, Jon shared stories of life at Brandeis during the 1960s, his early days as a music critic for Rolling Stone and his storied career in music production and management. A highlight of the evening was Jon's reunion with Robert Cohen '67, the lead singer in Jon's band while at Brandeis.

More than 35 Boston-based alumni returned to campus on November 12 for a cocktail networking reception to reconnect with Brandeis and fellow alumni in their field.... After the reception, 43 industry volunteers (including 21 alumni) hosted networking tables to share career advice with current students at the Hiatt Career Center's 5th Annual Biotech, Health & Science Forum. The event also featured an alumni panel discussion on technology's role in improving health outcomes, moderated by Steve Usdin, senior editor at BioCentury. Panelists included Willis Chandler ’97, MBA, executive vice president at Shields Pharmacy Services; Kimberly Lindfield, PhD ’96, director of biostatistics at Cubist Pharmaceuticals; and Jon Waldstreicher '05, M.D., M.B.A., principal at Apple Tree Partners. New this year, the panel was streamed live to an online audience of Brandeis alumni and friends. Ten volunteers, including eight Boston area alumni, were back on campus on Thursday, November 7, for the Hiatt Career Center's Practice Interview Day.... The volunteers conducted 33 simulated interviews and offered constructive feedback to help current students improve their skills in advance of spring internship and full-time job applications. Alumni volunteers represented a variety of industries - from human resources to economic consulting - and class years - from 1961 to 2010. Volunteers included: Lesley Kingsley '61, Etta Lappen Davis '73, John Parcellin '74, Mary Rosen '82, JD, Hillary Grossman Rosenfeld '86, Melissa Stepno '99, Anna Kaufman '10 and Nadir Daudi '10. Bold alumni proved their smarts on Thursday, October 24 as they participated in the 2nd Annual Bold Trivia Night at Dillon’s Restaurant & Bar in Boston.... Nearly 70 Boston-area alumni from the classes of 2004-2013 competed in an evening of friendly competition as they tried to best each other at both general and Brandeis-centric trivia. Guests enjoyed delicious refreshments as they played, as well as an energetic environment as the Boston Red Sox took on the St. Louis Cardinals right down the street at Fenway Park for the second game of the World Series. More than 100 current Wien students, Wien alumni and members of the extended Wien family gathered on campus on October 5-6 to celebrate the program’s 55th anniversary.... The weekend included a series of events to commemorate program founders Lawrence and Mae Wien's legacy and the success of the innovative program and its more than 900 alumni. Saturday programming featured a panel discussion with current Wien Scholars, followed by a panel with Wien alumni from various decades and backgrounds. The pinnacle of the weekend was Saturday evening’s celebratory dinner keynote address by Brandeis trustee and former Wien Scholar Olaf Olafsson '85, who was introduced by President Lawrence. Sunday festivities wrapped up on a high-note with a farewell brunch, including remarks by David Elwell, director of the International Students and Scholars Office, and Patsy Fisher, vice president of alumni relations in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

On Tuesday, September 17, 81 alumni from the tri-state area came out for a thrilling performance at Lincoln Center.... Alec Baldwin set the scene and introduced each score played by the NY Philharmonic which was accompanied by clips from classic Hitchcock films, played on the screen overhead. A pre-show reception was held at Arpeggio, in Avery Fisher Hall, which was attended by 47 alumni and friends. The group arrived to Citizens Bank Park early for a special private tour of the Hall of Fame Club, the Diamond Club and the Media Room, some of the Park's most exclusive areas. Following the tour, guests experienced the game from press-level seating in the Hall of Fame Club, where they had access to the Cooperstown Gallery and other private amenities. They enjoyed a wine-focused afternoon with a winery tour, tasting of award-winning vintages and wine seminar with owner and vintner Rudolph Valentino DiTommaso. Chicago alumni gave back to their local community by spending their Wednesday evening volunteering at the Greater Chicago Food Depository on August 14.... Volunteers are crucial to the Food Depository's success, which distributed more than 64 million pounds of food to people in need last year. The Brandeis group used their time repackaging bulk rice to individual sizes that were disbursed to hungry Chicagoans. Steve Wander '97 chaired this event.

Winter arrived a few months early in Connecticut as alumni and their families experienced a performance of “The Winter’s Tale” on Sunday, August 11... at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford. In central Connecticut's longest-running Shakespeare festival, the Capital Classics Theatre Company performed the Bard's tale of kings and queens, long-lost children, destructive passions, and miracles born through the redemptive power of love. More than 50 alumni and Brandeis National Committee (BNC) members joined Reverend Walter Cuenin for lunch on-campus on Tuesday, May 7. Guests enjoyed boxed lunches and mingling before Father Cuenin took to the podium to discuss the appointment of Pope Francis and its meaning for the Church’s relationship with Judaism. The discussion was wide-ranging and covered topics from the Church’s medieval history to its role during World War II to its character in the 21st century. The event was hosted by Etta Lappen Davis ’73, Ken Davis ’66, P’11, Barbara Cantor Sherman ’54, P’83, Jeff Jonas ’85, P’15, Wendy Morris Berliner ’95, and Greater Boston Club President Doug Rosner ’88.

Alumni, family and friends from around the Capitol gathered on Sunday, May 5 for a discussion with Naghmeh Sohrabi, assistant professor of Middle East history, about the political landscape of Iran’s upcoming presidential... election. With such turmoil that surrounded the 2009 election, including accusations of vote-rigging and protests, the 2013 election has the potential to equally as volatile. Guests enjoyed refreshments as Professor Sohrabi talked about some of the debates surrounding Iranian politics. Alumni, family and friends enjoyed an afternoon among the famed cherry blossoms as architectural historian Bill Lebovich ’70 led a guided walking tour of Washington, D.C. ... Guests took a closer look at the Capitol’s architectural heritage, traveling from the Smithsonian Museum of the 19th century to the Holocaust Museum of the 20th century. While walking along the Tidal Basin and exploring the flower gardens, Bill conducted a demonstration to teach attendees how best to photograph architecture, landscapes and flowers.

Nearly 100 alumni and friends joined a live, online conversation with Christopher Bedford, the Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum, who shared his vision for the Rose Art Museum. Bedford, who joined Brandeis last... year, discussed the current exhibit and the "exquisite space" that he is excited to work in. South Florida alumni and friends celebrated the beautiful Miami weather by attending an outdoor New World Symphony WallCast Concert on Saturday, April 6.... The outdoor presentation, located just outside the New World Center, allowed guests to experience the symphonic concert through a soaring, 7,000-square-foot projection wall. Brandeisians brought blankets, snacks and their love of music to this Concerto Showcase performance.

On Saturday, March 23, Boston-area alumni and family enjoyed a morning of community service at Cradles to Crayons, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing children ages 0-12 some of the most important basics of life, free... of charge. Participants spent the morning sorting and gathering items to be distributed to local children living in poverty, and left with a feeling of accomplishment and pride in their efforts. Brandeis alumni, along with family and friends, enjoyed an exciting night of basketball as the hometown Philadelphia 76ers took on the Indiana Pacers at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday, March 16, 2013. From their Club Box... seats, guests watched the home team beat the competition 98-91. Attendees not only were given inside access as they watched the teams warm up two hours before tip-off, but also received complimentary 76ers t-shirts and hats. Boston-area alumni gathered at the TD Garden on Saturday, March 2 to cheer on the Bruins in their 3-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. This game marked the sixth straight win for the Bruins! Sacco's Bowl Haven in Somerville was taken over by Brandeis for a night as more than 50 young Boston-area alumni gathered for the Bold Bowling Night on Thursday, February 21. These young alumni and friends enjoyed an evening of... candlepin bowling at one of the region’s oldest alleys. Delicious pizzas and salads, courtesy of the Flatbread Company, were on hand as guests laced up their shoes and struck out on the lanes. Erica Friedman '06 and Bailey Orshan '06 chaired this event.

Brandeis alumni, family and friends celebrated the end of the Boston Celtics’ six-game losing streak as the home team beat the Miami Heat 100-98 in double overtime on Sunday, January 27... at the 7th annual Celtics alumni event. This was former Celtics guard Ray Allen’s first visit back to New England, where the two teams’ rivalry was on clear display. More than 100 fans of all ages joined the Brandeis group, who enjoyed unrivaled views from the 9th floor promenade of the TD Garden while snacking on nachos, hot dogs and soft pretzels at the food table.

Brandeis alumni, family and friends showed their school spirit as they came out to cheer on the men’s and women’s basketball teams for our annual Alumni Family Basketball Day on Sunday, January 13. More than 150 Brandeis fans... showed up to support the Judges as both teams took on Case Western Reserve University. Guests enjoyed refreshments in the hospitality room, took photos with Ollie the Owl, and met the men’s team for autographs and pictures following their game. As 2012 came to a close, Brandeis alumni from coast to coast enjoyed happy hours to celebrate and embrace the holiday spirit. More than 40 Boston-area young alumni gathered at Lir on Boylston Street on Thursday, December 6 to kick... off the seasonal celebrations. Event chairs Anna Kaufman ’10 and Mariah Rich ’10 helped plan a wildly successful and well-attended celebration. Connecticut alumni mixed and mingled at Barcelona Wine Bar in New Haven, CT on Tuesday, December 11. Event chairs Bonnie Becker ’80 and Leah Zweig ’01 joined guests as they dined on a variety of Spanish-style tapas for a week night respite from the hectic pre-holiday work rush. Club co-presidents Monica Katz-Lapides ’06 and Lauren Becker ’08 led the festivities for the Northern California alumni at their 5th Annual Holiday Happy Hour at Rye Bar in San Francisco on Wednesday, December 12. Finishing the round of happy hours was an event hosted by the Alumni Club of Southern California. Alumni from the Los Angeles area kicked off their shoes at Lucky Strike in Hollywood on Thursday, December 13. Event chair Jeffrey Cornejo ’10 led the Brandeis group in an evening of bowling to de-stress before the holiday season ended.

Toronto alumni attended a presentation given by Dr. Svetlena Taneva, MA'05, to learn about the safeties and dangers associated with being a medical patient on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation... at Toronto General Hospital. A question and answer session followed the presentation, and Dr. Taneva subsequently led the group on a tour of the state-of-the-art healthcare usability simulation labs where the majority of new medical devices and hospital processes are tested. Following the talk, guests joined club co-presidents Myra ‘68 and Charles ‘68 Novogrodsky for a dim sum lunch.

Another highlight of the event was a performance by student a cappella group Starving Artists. More than 200 alumni, parents and friends gathered at the residence of U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shapiro '91 and his wife, Julie Fisher '90, in Herzliya on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. President Fred and Dr. Kathy Lawrence brought... greetings from campus and spoke of the many Brandeis-Israel connections. The event took place just as the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas was being announced. Ambassador Shapiro had canceled all of that week's events at the residence except this one to focus on achieving the cease-fire.

On Sunday, November 18, 2012, Philadelphia-area alumni convened for an open committee meeting as the Philadelphia club took its first step towards revitalization. In a meeting led by newly appointed club presidents... Diony Elias ’04 and Denise Silber Brooks ’84, P’16, alumni brainstormed ideas for upcoming club programming and ways to reengage the Brandeis community in the area. This "silver anniversary" event drew alumni from all decades as well as students who are studying abroad in London this semester.

On Sunday, November 10, 2012, a group of Brandeis alumni gathered for a day of community service in San Francisco at Family House, a non-profit organization that provides free temporary housing to families of seriously ill... children receiving cancer treatment at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. This was the first event put on by BrandAid, a subdivision of the alumni club committed to social justice and community service. Alumni spent the day cleaning and doing service that helped the children and families living at Family House. Club president Lauren Becker ’08 chaired the event.

Allan Lichtman ’67, Distinguished Professor of History at American University, presented his prediction system, The Keys to the White House, to the crowd of curious alumni, which has correctly forecast ahead of time results of every American presidential election since 1984.

Alumni journeyed through the sweet, chocolaty history of the city with trips to both popular, modern chocolate... shops and hidden, charming treasures. Not only was the tour a wonder for the eyes and nose, but also a treat for the stomach as guests savored the different chocolate confectioneries at each stop! Northern California-area alumni and friends gathered on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at AT&T Park in San Francisco for the third annual Giants baseball game. It was a battle between north and south as this marked the last game of the... three-game series between the home team and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tickets sold out to this evening game, where alums and their families watched through a lovely summer sunset. Baseball fans left happy as the Giants beat their opponents 4-0, winning the series 2-1. Club co-president Monica Katz-Lapides ’06 chaired the event.

Denver-area alumni gathered for a discussion of Don Lee's acclaimed book "Yellow" on Sunday, April 29, 2012, led by Michaele Whelan, vice provost for academic affairs and senior lecturer in English. Set in the fictional California... town of Rosarita Bay, "Yellow" explores what it means to be Asian in America through the post-immigrant examination of identity, race and love. In 2005, "Yellow" was selected as the book for the Brandeis New Student Forum. Now in its 20th year, the Helen and Philip Brecher New Student Forum is an Orientation tradition designed to generate an early and lasting sense of intellectual community at Brandeis by bringing together the entire first-year class with members of the faculty.

The group spent the morning sorting and packing donations that had been... collected by the Food Bank in the week prior. Each box needed to contain a mix of foods for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks – and had to weigh 15 pounds.
