Tuesdays at Brandeis Extra: Mental Health

Mary Shimko

I think Sab that the other thing that I really like am inspired by is your ability to have, you know, open, honest, vulnerable conversations. You know, we say, can we get out of our comfort zones to grow and to do that, you have to open up. You have to be willing to share. And I think you've been somebody who is really comfortable to share.

Mary Shimko

How have you Sab how does that come to be like? What would encouraged you to be so vulnerable and, you know, placing so much importance on your relationships and in that growth?

Sabrina Salov

Whenever I think about like that, when people ask me that question, because it happens often, because they're always just like, wow, like Sab, like, thank you so much for sharing you know. And just like at this point, it feels like something that I don't have to like really think about. It's like I want to be able to share things with people so they feel more safe and comfortable to do that also.

Sabrina Salov

You actually played such a large piece and like a role in that because obviously mental health is super important to me and I am formally like an advocate in that. And also obviously I just like I like to speak about it informally with my friends, but it wasn't like until I spoke with you, like during my sophomore season and you were like, Hey, can we talk about what's going on?

Sabrina Salov

Because I clearly, clearly had like bags under my eyes and my very pale like not I didn't sleep a lot of hours, you know, and it was nice that somebody was able to like, I mean, let alone my coach, like, no, they notice that there is something up. And it takes a lot of courage to even say that because sometimes, like, you don't want to be the one to like force a conversation if that person's not ready.

Sabrina Salov

And I've been in that position before and it sucks, like when you try to help someone and they really don't want it. And if it wasn't for you, it's like, sit me down and have that conversation, I would have never opened up. I would have never seen a therapist, I would have never sought help afterwards. And like,

Mary Shimko

You're making me tear up.

Sabrina Salov

No like, it literally was a start of like my whole recovery journey and like that was like it's so much like the reason why I'm the person I am today, you know? So thank you for that.
