A. Genius at Work: Thoughts and Reflections

bulletJacqueline Jones, Truman Professor of American Civilization and chair, Department of History, Brandeis University; MacArthur Fellow
bullet Bernadette Brooten, Myra and Robert Kraft and Jacob Hiatt Professor of Christian Studies, Brandeis University; MacArthur Fellow

Two of the three Brandeis professors selected as MacArthur "genius" award winners in the past three years will explore the evolution of their academic thought and the ways their work challenges conventional scholarship in their fields. Professor Jones is a social historian whose scholarship examines the experience of workers through the lens of economic transformations throughout American history in new and interesting ways, exploring such diverse themes as the transition from slavery to free labor and the history of the American labor union movement. Professor Brooten’s scholarship provides fresh interpretations of the patterns of power, social structure, and morality in ancient communities through research focused on women's roles and sexuality in biblical times.

B. Partners in Learning: Creative Journeys

bulletGerald S. Bernstein, associate professor of fine arts, Brandeis University
bullet Gary Tinterow '76, Englehard Curator of European Paintings, Metropolitan Museum of Art

Close relationships are characteristic of Brandeis students and faculty, as represented in the international bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie. This session will highlight another example of a Brandeis professor whose guidance has influenced both the intellectual growth and professional life of his student. Professor Bernstein and Gary Tinterow share a special, enduring relationship that has enriched each of their lives. Join them for a wide-ranging discussion about a student-teacher relationship that has spanned several decades.
