In the technological age, the face of business has changed.
Globalization, mergers and rivalries, the World Trade Organization, and
the Internet are all parts of the "new economy." Technology was
supposed to save us time, yet we're more stressed than ever before. Is
this really the society we want, or that we imagined in our college days?
Alumni representing Brandeis students of three "generations"-the
1960s, 1970s, and 1980s-reflect on their expectations and experiences,
and on life in a global economy.
B. Behavioral Genetics: Our Bodies, Our Cells
Michael Rosbash, professor and chair, Department of Biology,
Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and Volen National Center
for Complex Systems, Brandeis University
The body intrinsically observes a daily regimen of wakefulness and
sleep that we generally take for granted. As anyone who has experienced
the misery of jet lag or worked the night shift knows, however, disturbing
our natural rhythms exacts a toll. How much of our internal clock is based
on external cues, and how much is inherited? Is there a relationship
linking genetics, sleep, and human diseases? Professor Rosbash, renowned
for his groundbreaking work in circadian rhythms, will explore what
genetics can teach us about ourselves.
