Auditing a Class at Brandeis

Please contact the Office of Continuing Studies at 781-736-8787 or conted@brandeis.edu for an Alumni Auditor's packet which will include complete instructions as well as the registration forms (enrollment form, parking permit form, and a permission form for the instructor to sign). The fee per class is $75 for alumni. To view the schedule of classes go to: http://www.brandeis.edu/registrar/reg-sched/sch.html (be sure this class has a 999 code).

Auditing a course can be an extremely valuable experience because it allows you to participate in the academic community with a different, and less demanding, set of responsibilities. The Rabb School´s Alumni Auditor Program exists to allow you this opportunity. We realize, however, that you may not be familiar with the auditing process, and so here is what to expect.

After the First Class Meeting:

After the first meeting of your class, it is necessary to speak to the professor to negotiate your role as auditor. It helps for everyone involved if your role is clear from the start in terms of the kind of participation the professor expects from you, what you hope to get out of the class, and what you and the professor would like you to contribute. In some classes, especially ones that are lecture-based, the professor expects only that you will sit in on the class. In other classes, the professor might appreciate your contributing to discussion.

Class Participation:

When you audit a course, you should not interrupt the regular dynamic of the class. As an auditor, you are in many ways an observer within the class, and your role in the course is not to dominate discussion or to take attention away from what the professor and course for credit students have to say. When you audit a course, graded work is not allowed. Do not take tests or quizzes, complete writing assignments, or participate in projects required for those taking the class on a "for credit" basis.

Parking Permit and Library Privileges:

Temporary parking permits are issued each semester when you register. You are welcome to use the library, but you do not have check out privileges unless you are a dues-paid alumnus with a valid alumni membership card.
