Following a successful event at New York’s Brandeis House on November 29, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) Affinity Group is ramping up efforts to re-invigorate both its membership and annual activities. Currently, GLBT has approximately 300 self-identified members. According to group representative Thomas W. Brown ’95, many more alumni have expressed interest and are eager to get involved. “Since the spring, after reaching out to alumni through Louie News, we’ve seen an up tick in interest and membership,” says Brown, who notes that the group is making a special effort to attract younger graduates who may benefit even more from the networking aspects of membership.
The GLBT Affinity Group will host its next event on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 6:30pm at Brandeis House in New York City. The program, The GLBT Experience at Brandeis, will feature a panel of Brandeis alumni from the 1950s through the present who will disucss how the GLBT experience on campus has changed over the decades.
Hosting events and providing networking opportunities are just two of the goals of the newly energized GLBT Affinity Group. Brown and Cabrera have also established the GLBT Research Fellowship Program, which will fund broadly defined undergraduate research in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) studies at Brandeis beginning in the fall of 2007. The program will focus exclusively on intellectual activity and research in the areas of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
